Symphony No. 1 "Colombiana" (2017)
for the victims of the armed conflict in Colombia
(approx. 40 minutes for full orchestra)
Five movements:
I. Fandango
II. Bullerengue
III. Currulao
IV. Lamento en Porro
V. Mapalé
The Symphony No. 1 unfolds as a journey through Colombia’s rhythmic and emotional landscape — from irony to ritual, lament, and rebirth.
Each movement reimagines a traditional Afro-Colombian or mestizo dance through the lens of contemporary orchestral writing, transforming rhythm into memory and sound into resistance.
The opening Fandango mocks celebration as chaos; Bullerengue turns grief into prayer; Currulao revives motion through layered pulse; Lamento en Porro confronts collective cynicism and mourning; and Mapalé bursts forth as a final act of survival — a dance of light after darkness.
Rich in percussion color and harmonic depth, the work fuses Latin American vitality with modern symphonic craft.
It stands as both testimony and catharsis: music that remembers, resists, and ultimately celebrates the endurance of life.
